My childhood connection to Jesus and the Bible came from the Catholic Church up to age ten. From age 10 to age 20 I had no church connection. I was a sometimes Christmas and Easter kind of guy. Then at age 20, while attending a Sunday service with my dad at New Testament Baptist church here in Tucson, I raised my hand, went forward and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. While it was a very meaningful and emotional experience, my day-to-day life did not change.
God got ahold of me in 2005 when Vicki and I took a four month long RV trip. During that trip I had what I describe as, Jesus tapping me on my shoulder and saying: Lamar did you see that? Lamar did you hear that? I was hyper aware of Jesus. In all there were about 15 or more Jesus taps.
As soon as we got back to Tucson we began attending Calvary Tucson. We actually went to church twice a week! And, we were baptized. It was like we couldn’t get enough. We were at Calvary Tucson for 15 years serving in Children’s Ministry and with the New Believer’s Ministry were we taught classes. I also served on the Communion Board, as an usher and as a deacon.
In the summer of 2020, during the Covid period, Calvary Tucson discontinued their live church services. That change motivated Vicki and I to search out a new church home. After visiting ten different churches and praying for God’s guidance, we choose Saguaro Canyon Church as our home church.
